Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a major prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
