Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.
This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
